Houndsley and Catina and the birthday surprise, by James Howe

Houndsley the dog is sad because he doesn't know when his birthday is. When he tells his friend, Catina, the cat she also seems sad. Unbeknownst to the other, each friend plans a suprise birthday party for the other. Told in three short chapters, this book for new readers is a delightful story of friendship accompanied by expressive watercolor, pencil and collage illustrations. The text hits just the right emotional note.

What a fun book for beginning readers. There is gentle humor and a bit of suspense. The illustrations are cleverly done. See also Houndsley and Catina, the first entry in this new series. In it, Catina is trying to write a book, but she doesn't enjoy it. Houndsley discovers that she is a terrible writer. He also learns that he loves to cook. The message: do what you love. We might consider listing these two books together in our Best Books list. I think they are destined to find a permanent niche in the easy reader genre.

I agree that the emotional component is wonderful--it is great to see a book designed for novice readers that has a good storyline and a little character development too!
The kids seem to agree as I have a hard time catching up with this book as it is always gone!
